If you’re from around here, chances are you’ve seen at least one opossum waddling down the side of a country road late at night. As our state’s only marsupial, they get to carry their young in a pouch. And while only the babies dangle from their tails, it’s still one of those quirky traits that makes them unlike anything else hanging out in our woods.
For most of us, they mean late-night dog barking to let you know an outsider has wandered in. But for our local ecosystem, they mean so much more.
They’re nature’s little custodians, cleaning up and dining on the creepiest crawly critters and keeping things in balance.
Opossums have adapted to live alongside us and survive just about anywhere — a late-night reminder of what can endure through the dark.
